The final paper piece in The Gleaning moves from the plant stand to the kitchen counter. A clear, round vase holds a generous bunch of garden roses, each layered bloom in magenta, coral and apricot traced with delicate drawn lines. Through the glass, green stems crisscross in the water, and sprigs of greenery spill over the rim. Behind it, a row of hand-painted tiles in gold, blush, sage, deep green and slate adds a cheerful, homemade rhythm. It's a painting about the small, pieced-together moments that make up a life, and the flowers we bring in to brighten them.
